For centuries, Bengal’s fakirs and sannyasis traveled freely across the region, living among the people and playing an important role in local society. But after the East India Company gained control of Bengal’s revenues in 1765, new taxes, restrictions, and interference in religious life began to transform the countryside.
What followed was one of the earliest and most remarkable acts of resistance against British rule—the Fakir-Sannyasi Rebellion. Led by figures such as Majnu Shah and Musa Shah, these rebels challenged the growing power of the East India Company and left a lasting mark on the history of Bengal.
In this documentary, we explore the origins of the movement, the lives of the fakirs and sannyasis, the role of rural Bengal, and the forgotten struggle that unfolded decades before the Revolt of 1857.
