We thought we were about to welcome a healthy new baby to the farm… Instead, we found ourselves in one of the most emotional and stressful births we’ve ever experienced. Toffee was struggling to make any progress during labour, and it became clear that she needed assistance to safely deliver her cria. But once he arrived, the real fight had only just begun. His umbilical stump tore away almost immediately after birth, leaving him bleeding from his abdomen. As we examined him, we discovered several congenital birth defects that would make his future uncertain. In those first few hours of life, we truly didn’t know if he would survive. This is the side of farming that people don’t always see. Not every birth goes according to plan, and not every baby gets a perfect start. Sometimes all you can do is act quickly, provide the best care possible, and hope that a tiny fighter has the strength to keep going.
