Grinding & Fixing Pots Using Diamond Tools

This week, I'm covering what's very often an unspoken part of the making process and that's how pieces are tidied up post firing, especially if they've been fired on waddings, (50% kaolin, 50% coarse alumina hydrate), a practice that's more common with wood, salt and soda firings, yet it's still applicable for gas and electric firings too, especially when you're using glazes that are more on the fluid side. In this video, I show you how I fix pots where the glaze has flowed too much, welding the pot place but not causing any damage to it or the kiln shelf. I use an assortment of tools, from Diamondcore Tools diamond grinding disks and pads, to a Dremel, (a knock-off version at least), that's used to do the more finicky polishing towards the end of the process. All in all, it's a step that must be done carefully, without causing additional damage to the vessel. This is easier said than done but it's a skill worth learning as it's rather remarkable what you can actually end up saving.
