The tombs of Prophet Muhammad’s family, companions, and prominent scholars were destroyed, leaving the cemetery as a flat, unmarked site, often referred to as a "Day of Sorrow" Key Aspects of the Demolition: Target: The cemetery was leveled to destroy mausoleums and shrines over graves. Who Demolished: The demolition was carried out by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under King Ibn Saud. Reason: The destruction was motivated by a Wahhabi interpretation of Islam which forbids building monuments or shrines over graves, considering it idolatry.
