These Wrecks May Have Just Saved Our Trip

Episode 3 of the Rust to Dust Cape York series kicks off at the iconic Lions Den Hotel as the crew points five old Hiluxes north and starts pushing deeper into Cape York. Day 3 begins with the last major fuel stops through Laura and Coen before the convoy hits the PDR — and almost immediately, the red dirt starts claiming victims. Ron Burgundy develops a brutal exhaust leak that makes the cabin nearly unbearable, forcing the boys into a proper bush mechanic fix using whatever they can find on the side of the road… including parts scavenged from old vehicle wrecks left behind in the Cape. As the crew continues north, the damage from Cyclone Narelle and Maila becomes clear. Fallen trees, washed-out sections, and storm-smashed tracks show just how wild the wet season has been — but with the roads finally open and barely another vehicle in sight, there’s a real chance the boys could be among the first crews to reach the Old Telegraph Track this season. The day ends at Archer River Roadhouse as the sun goes down, but the work doesn’t stop there. Camp turns into a late-night workshop as the team tackles preventative fixes on the Road Stallion’s steering and Billy Goat’s suspension before the real Cape York tracks begin.
