Fenton, Missouri --- According to police, on March 21, 2025, at 10:23 a.m., two St. Louis County police officers from the South County Precinct advised the Bureau of Communications they were conducting an arrest attempt in the 1000 block of Hawkins Bend Drive, Fenton, Missouri. The charge was Harassment First Degree, and tampering with a motor vehicle in the second degree. According to court documents, The man now identified as Aleksandr Lanis, 38 years old, had been recorded on March 8 trying to put something in the gas tank of his wife's family member outside an event his wife was attending. Lanis’ wife had previously obtained an order of protection against him, which was later dismissed following a divorce settlement. As part of that settlement, Lanis was required to stay away from his wife, refrain from possessing firearms, and arrange child custody exchanges only at their child's school or a police station. According to court documents, Lanis allegedly violated the agreement by tampering with his wife family’s car, presumably aware that his wife was present at the time of the incident. When officers attempted to take him into custody, Lanis physically resisted his arrest and displayed a handgun. A struggle began inside the home and officers wrestled him to the ground. While fighting for control of Lanis's handgun, officers continued giving commands to him to drop the weapon. In an attempt to de-escalate the encounter and subdue Lanis, one officer did deploy a taser, but Lanis continued to struggle, and eventually both officers fired their service weapons, striking Lanis. Following the shooting, officers administered CPR to Lanis, however he was pronounced deceased on scene. Detectives recovered a Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm semi-automatic handgun attributed to Lanis. In total, 13 shots were fired by law enforcement. No shots were fired by Lanis. The St. Louis County Police officers involved in the use of force are: 30 years of age with eight years of law enforcement experience, and 22 years of age with one year of law enforcement experience. One officer sustained an injury to his hand and was treated at the scene. Lanis was a Family Medicine Doctor Internist in St. Louis.
