You Will Not Believe This Blue Jellyfish-Looking Creature Is Actually a Floating Colony‼️😱 This is Velella velella, also called the by-the-wind sailor, and even though it looks like a tiny jellyfish, it’s actually a colonial hydrozoan. That means it’s not just one simple animal. It’s made of a bunch of tiny connected animals called polyps that work together as one drifting creature. Some polyps help with feeding, some help with reproduction, and the whole colony floats around using that little clear sail on top. The wild part is they don’t really choose where they go. The wind pushes them across the ocean, and sometimes huge numbers of them wash onto beaches all at once. They can sting tiny plankton, but they usually aren’t dangerous to humans. Still, it’s smart not to rub your eyes after touching one because they do have mild stinging cells.
