Description

It's an Early Spring 💙🐻‍❄️ Having first investigated the possibility of a late winter, male Polar bear Hudson determined, like many of us, that we've had enough of winter and that spring should be on the horizon with a swipe of his paw ☀️ Today is all about predictions, but the four Polar bear ambassadors at your Toronto Zoo are reminding us of something deeper: changing ice and shifting temperatures are a reality and not simply a forecast. Resident polar bears Aurora, Nikita, Hudson, and Juno are challenging us each and every day to ask an important question: how best can we be Guardians of Wild, protecting a thriving future for our wildlife and wild spaces? Here at your Toronto Zoo, that question is at the heart of our Guardians of Wild Strategic Plan, which guides how we lead on conservation, climate action, and sustainability - not just for wildlife, but for the people and communities who share this planet. It’s why we’ve stepped forward as a leader, committing to bold climate goals and signing on to global pacts that recognize the urgent need to protect biodiversity and stabilize our climate. Being Guardians of Wild means we are actively supporting environmental initiatives such as Canada’s National Priorities for Climate Change Science and Knowledge Report and the Environment and Climate Change Canada Science Strategy. Your Zoo is also committed to achieving Net Zero - taking meaningful action to reduce emissions, protect biodiversity, and lead by example in building a more sustainable future. This Groundhog Day, we’re looking beyond an early spring or six more weeks of winter. We’re thinking long-term, about the seasons we want future generations, both human and wild, to experience. The polar bears are reminding us that while we might be dreaming of warmer days ahead, we need to be thinking of climate change impacts - it’s a call to action we simply can’t bear to ignore 💙🐻‍❄️
