Engineering the Future: Stories from the CSU

While still students, Siana Iniguez and Imani Maywear used engineering to take on urgent, real-world challenges. Iniguez designed a wastewater treatment facility and pipeline network for MacArthur, California, a rural community that had lived for decades without a modern wastewater system. Maywear built an off-grid, fully electric mobile home to test eco-friendly materials under real environmental stress, connecting astrophysics, engineering design, and climate resilience. Their stories reflect the applied-learning approach of the California State University system, where engineering and technology students are encouraged to move beyond theory and into community-connected work with measurable impact.
