Description

On 02 February 2026, I had the rare privilege of filming the world’s last flying Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation “Connie” / C-121 at Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) in Shellharbour, NSW. This video documents the aircraft’s full ground and flight sequence: engine start, run-up, taxi, takeoff, low flypast, and landing, filmed in 4K UHD from close range. One of the most spectacular and iconic features of the Super Constellation is on full display here: - Thick smoke and visible flames during engine start - Exhaust flames on takeoff and landing. These dramatic sights are a signature of large radial piston engines and a powerful reminder of the raw, mechanical character of 1950s propliner aviation. The Connie is powered by the legendary Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone engines — the same engine family that powered the famous Boeing B-29 Superfortress. Seeing and hearing these engines run today is like witnessing WWII and golden-age airline history come alive at once. Beyond the visuals, this footage aims to preserve the living history of one of the most beautiful airliners ever built — an aircraft that represents the golden age of long-haul flight. HARS is a truly special Australian museum dedicated to preserving, restoring, and operating historic aircraft so future generations can experience aviation heritage firsthand. Keeping an aircraft like the Super Constellation airworthy is an extraordinary effort that deserves recognition and support. If you love aviation history, HARS is well worth a visit or support: https://hars.org.au/ Epic Piston Sound | The Only Flying L1049 Super Constellation Full Operation | Documentary Style
