President Donald Trump has dubbed NATO as a ‘paper tiger’ after the US-led 32-member security alliance refused to join the US-Israel war on Iran. The US president also said Washington was considering pulling the US out of NATO, a decision that Trump insisted was now “beyond reconsideration”, Telegraph reported. “I would say [it’s] beyond reconsideration. I was never swayed by Nato. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way”, Trump told the Telegraph. Trump’s remarks come against the backdrop of NATO members’ reported reluctance to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil typically passes. Tehran has effectively closed the crucial waterway for weeks now, sending oil and gas prices spiralling worldwide while threatening a global recession.
