But as all of that's going down in China, we have to talk about another complicated situation that's playing out at home. Because a South Carolina Republican just shut Trump down on his call for their new maps, but that’s partly because he doesn’t want too many Black voters to show up at the midterms. He spoke to state lawmakers for over 45 minutes to make sure the maps didn’t go through, and it’s the biggest hand to Trump’s face we’ve seen since the primaries started.
Right, so, as it stands, Republicans have pretty much put the nail in the coffin with redistricting. They 86’ed Virginia’s referendum vote. The Supreme Court sliced right through the Voting Rights Act for Louisiana. Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri – they’re having their way all over the South. Democrats have fought back as much as possible, but so far, it hasn’t worked out.
And this week, South Carolina was supposed to be next on the list to change up their maps.
Right, they were gunning for the only blue district in the state. Even Trump weighed in, saying he was “counting on their Elected Leaders” to “[level] the playing field against [Democrats’] decades of egregious Gerrymandering and Census Rigging.” He told them, “be bold!” Be “courageous!”
South Carolina’s Senate Majority Leader, Shane Massey even got a call from the big guy himself to put some extra pep in his step ahead of the vote to extend the legislative session to approve the maps. But in the end – nothing.
In fact, nothing is an understatement because Massey flipped the script with a speech calling the push for new maps a “perfect example of just how much elected officials have lost their way.”
“Too many people in power just want to do whatever it takes to stay in power. They’ll do whatever it takes to keep it, but I ask to what end? What do you do with it when you’ve attained it?”
Right, so South Carolina Republicans already have a 6 to 1 lead in the House. And that one is James Clyburn, who’s held the seat since 1993. When he got elected, he was South Carolina’s first Black member of Congress since Reconstruction. And while some other state Republicans were ready to push him out of that seat, Massey was worried that they were about to shoot themselves in the foot.
“If we start tinkering with this, my concern is that we can make this a whole lot worse.” His argument had a few layers to it, but one big point he made was that trying to get Cl-eye-burn’s district would risk other strongholds slipping through the cracks.
