Description

That brake rotor in this video has clearly seen better days. 😭 Before modern cars used disc brakes, most vehicles relied on drum brakes. Early brake shoes were often made with materials containing asbestos because it handled heat well and was cheap to produce. The downside was that asbestos dust was later found to be dangerous to human health, which led manufacturers to develop safer alternatives. As disc brakes became more common during the 1950s and 1960s, brake pad technology evolved quickly. Modern brake pads are usually made from three main types of materials: organic compounds, semi-metallic compounds, and ceramic materials. Organic pads are generally the cheapest option and produce less noise, while semi-metallic pads offer better performance and durability but can create more brake dust. Ceramic pads are typically the most expensive for everyday road cars because they are quieter, produce less dust, and last longer under normal driving conditions. At the very top of the performance world are carbon-carbon and carbon-ceramic brake systems. These are found on supercars, hypercars, and race cars because they can handle extreme temperatures that would destroy ordinary brake pads. The tradeoff is cost. A complete carbon-ceramic brake setup can cost more than some used cars. No matter what material is used, brake pads have one simple job: convert speed into heat. Ignore them for too long, and eventually your brake rotor starts looking exactly like the one in this video. 💀 What are your thoughts? 🤔💭 (Credits: @DecadenceAutoworks [@decadenceautoworksofficial/IG]) #cars #brakes #brakepads #discbrakes #drumbrakes #carfacts #mechanic #automotive #hydraculture
