Description

This video shows Comet SWAN moving across the sky from August 25 to October 2, 2025, using unprocessed images from NASA’s PUNCH mission (Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere). The comet, marked with a circle, slowly shifts positions against a field of faint stars. The black lines are seams between image frames, the white spikes come from bright objects in the camera, and the background flickers are stars and cosmic rays. Halfway through, SWAN passes between Mars (top) and Spica (bottom). PUNCH normally studies the outer solar atmosphere and solar wind, but its cameras can also detect faint objects like comets. Tracking SWAN helps scientists study how comets behave as they pass near the Sun.
