Korean Naming Culture Explained by My Dad | Generational Names & Hanja

In Korea, it’s very common for siblings to share one character in their names — this is called a generational name (돌림자). My brother and I both share “Hyeon (현)”, which means sunshine 🌞 In this video, my dad explains why he chose our names, their meanings based on Hanja (Chinese characters), and the blessing he wished for us as his children. ✨ Sohyun (소현) → “So” meaning beautiful → “Hyeon” meaning sunshine ✨ Junghyun (정현) → “Jeong” meaning auspicious / blessed → “Hyeon” meaning sunshine Through our names, our dad wished for us to grow up bright, warm, and full of good fortune — just like sunshine. 💬 Does your country have special traditions when it comes to naming people?
