*Maqam Sikah (مقام السيكاه)*
Maqam Sikah is named after the Persian term meaning “the third sound” or “third degree.” While the name is Persian, the maqam itself is widely used throughout the Arab world in recitation, supplications, and anashid.
The original Sikah is built on its first three notes, and the upper jins above it is Rast. It has a distinctly Arab character, especially because of the quarter tone that appears in it. Like other maqamat that contain quarter tones, it may sound unfamiliar to someone who is not used to hearing it.
Sikah has a well-known branch called Huzam, which is more commonly used and has a slightly softer and more emotional feel. Huzam is a branch of Sikah, not a separate maqam. There are also other branches, such as Rahat al-Arwah, and combinations like Sikah mixed with Saba, which create different colors and expressions.
Although some people think Sikah is difficult to continue for a long recitation, many reciters have mastered it. Among those mentioned are Sheikh Al-Kankari, Sheikh Muhammad Al-Minshawi, Sheikh Al-Bahtimi, and Sheikh Muhammad Rif‘at, who even performed a full adhan in Sikah — something considered rare.
Sikah does not have one single fixed emotional identity like Saba or Ajam. It is described as close to Bayati and is considered a comprehensive maqam. It can suit different themes, and it was mentioned that verses related to battles, such as in Surah Aal ‘Imran and Surah Al-Anfal, are especially loved in this maqam.
Sikah is known to connect with other maqamat such as Rast and sometimes Hijaz. It is described as a maqam that meets with others and is friendly with other maqamat. At the same time, it is considered one of the more challenging maqamat, and some find it difficult to exit once they enter it.
Disclaimer: This series is meant to introduce the beauty of Maqamat as a tool to enhance recitation, not to replace its foundation. Before focusing on Maqamat, it is essential to learn and preserve proper Tajwid, since correct pronunciation and articulation are an obligation. The Qur’an was revealed for guidance, reflection, and transformation. Its meaning and message must always come before beautifying the voice or focusing on tone. Maqamat have their place, but they should serve the Qur’an and never overshadow its purpose.
