Description

What was the Serbian State Guard, or SDS, during World War II? The Serbian State Guard (SDS) was the collaborationist police and security force of Milan Nedić’s Government of National Salvation in German-occupied Serbia. Formed in 1942 from parts of the prewar Yugoslav gendarmerie, the SDS operated under the supervision of German SS and police authorities. Its duties included anti-partisan operations, border security, arrests, and maintaining “law and order” for the occupation regime. At its height, the SDS numbered between 25,000 and 35,000 men. The force also helped guard Banjica concentration camp near Belgrade and participated in arrests, reprisals, and executions alongside German occupation forces. Politically, many SDS officers leaned royalist and sympathized with Draža Mihailović’s Chetniks, creating tensions with the Germans and leading to repeated purges. As the Red Army advanced into the Balkans in 1944, the SDS collapsed during the retreat westward. In practice, the Serbian State Guard functioned as the police-army of the German occupation in Serbia, playing a major role in collaboration and repression during WWII.
