Fireball In The Sky Mystery Solved With AI After 47 Years

A recent painted I made caused me to recall a memory from 47 years ago. In the summer of 1979 I was in the backyard when I saw a cluster of fireballs travel across the night sky lasting 20-30 seconds. The fireballs had long tails and each was a slightly different color. I had no idea what I saw that night until I thought to look on Google to see if there was any information. I discovered that in July of that year a retired space station fell through the earth's atmosphere, creating fireballs. I then watched recent videos of a SpaceX rocket burning up in the atmosphere and noticed how similar it was to what I saw in 1979. I think the mystery has been solved. The video recounts the author's childhood memory from the summer of 1979, when they witnessed four fireballs with long, multi-colored tails moving across the night sky for about 20-30 seconds (1:06-1:24). For 47 years, the author wondered about the origin of these fireballs, initially thinking it might have been a large meteorite breaking apart (1:30-1:42). Recently, while making a painting (0:13-0:20), the memory resurfaced, prompting the author to search online. They discovered that in July 1979, the retired space station Skylab re-entered Earth's atmosphere, creating fireballs (2:12-2:25). By comparing this event to recent videos of a SpaceX rocket burning up during re-entry, the author found the visuals to be nearly identical to what they witnessed (2:54-3:22). Although Skylab crashed in Australia, the author is "pretty sure" this explains the mysterious fireballs they saw (3:35-3:59).
