Description
Today in WA Parliament, Maryka Groenewald MLC took a historic step by introducing the Born Equal Care and Protection Bill.
This landmark reform will: - Recognise every baby born alive during a termination as a human person, affirming their intrinsic value. - Ensure any baby who survives a termination receives the same level of care any newborn would, removing ambiguity about their right to treatment. - Abolish outdated clauses and require that the death of any baby born alive is reported to the coroner for proper investigation.
This Bill addresses a deeply troubling reality. Since 1998, 39 babies have survived abortion attempts, only to be left without life-saving or even palliative care. Official WA parliamentary records show that between 1999 and 2010, 14 babies were born alive after an abortion procedure and none received medical treatment.
This legislation is a pivotal moment for protecting vulnerable children in WA, ensuring they are treated with the dignity, care, and legal recognition they deserve.
