Phil’s first memories of cricket come from playing in the streets with his brother, using a tennis ball and competing to see who could hit it the furthest. Those early games sparked a love for cricket that carried through local club cricket and into school competitions. After travelling for several years as an adult, Phil was offered the chance to move to the Isle of Man by friends. It did not take long before cricket became part of his life again, getting involved with a local club and eventually stepping into a coaching role at national level. The conversation highlights the strong cricket programs in schools across the island and the emphasis placed on development at every age group. Local competitions regularly see between 100 and 120 children taking up the sport, showing the depth of interest and participation within the community. Phil explains that cricket on the island is traditionally played in 20 or 40 over formats, with midweek evening matches and longer weekend games. Exposure to the ECN T10 format presented a completely new challenge for Isle of Man players, requiring a different mindset, faster decision making and new skill sets. Phil reflects on the learning curve this created and discusses the potential of integrating T10 cricket into domestic schedules back home.
