Silica Gel Poisoning in Dogs - The Hidden Food Packet That Can Kill Your Pet

You’ve seen them before — those little moisture-absorbing packets labelled “Do Not Eat” found in human food, dog food, treats, supplements, shoes and packaging. But did you know silica gel and oxygen absorber packets can be extremely dangerous — and even fatal — if your dog eats one? Moisture-absorbing packets are designed to keep food fresh, but they are not safe if ingested. Depending on the type, they can cause Severe gastrointestinal irritation, intestinal blockage, chemical toxicity and prolonged suffering and death if untreated. Some packets swell dramatically when exposed to moisture, making them especially dangerous for dogs and cats who swallow them whole. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by a vet Treatment may include induced vomiting (only if safe and early), X-rays or imaging to check for blockages, IV fluids, endoscopy or surgery in severe cases, intensive supportive care.
