Scientists revived a previously unknown species of nematode worm, Panagrolaimus kolymaensis, after it was frozen in Siberian permafrost for 46,000 years. These worms survive by entering cryptobiosis, replacing cellular water with protective sugars to avoid ice crystal damage and halt metabolism almost completely.
