Description
A supergrid transformer is suspended between two trailers as it is transported through multiple towns in Cheshire. The heavy load prompts roads to be closed by police and street furniture to be removed.
The super-grid transformer has been manufactured by GE Vernova and is one of many to have travelled along the designated abnormal load route from their factory in Stafford to Ellesmere Port for export.
Collett & Sons transported the super-grid transformer cradled within their Greiner Side Girder Bridge System trailer. The tractor-trailer combination was pulled/pushed by MAN TGX and Mercedes-Benz Arocs tractor units (with a spare for extra power if needed). The combination totalled 63 metres in length, 5.7m in width, and had a total gross weight of 567 tonnes spread over 144 wheels.
Cheshire Police escorted the oversized load from a layby near Holmes Chapel to another layby near Chester, having completed the Staffordshire portion the previous day. It was then moved into Ellesmere Port and shipped to South Korea to be installed on a wind farm project. Several police cars and motorcycles were used to shut down roads as the oversized load moved.
