MISSING 20 YEARS: Did He Drive Into the River After Leaving the Casino?

This search brings Adventures With Purpose to Gold Beach, Oregon, for the case of August Richard Schwabenland, who was reported missing on November 16, 2004. August was last seen on November 13th, about 3.5 miles upriver from the Gold Beach jetty after withdrawing $200 from an ATM. The main theory is that he may have gone into the water on his way home. The investigation begins by reviewing the case details, including the possibility that August was trying to avoid law enforcement due to a medical issue, which may have influenced his route that day. The search plan is based on sonar scanning of specific high-probability areas. 🗺️ Using their advanced equipment and a remote-operated vehicle (ROV), the team targets several locations: a deep section of the river, an area near a local restaurant, and sections upstream near the road. During the search, the team speaks with a local resident who informs them about a vehicle that has been in the river's deep hole for a long time, possibly a Volkswagen. The team starts their day at a small boat ramp on the Rouge River. They manage the boat's speed to compensate for the fast-moving current and to ensure the sonar readings are as clear as possible. The scans show a riverbed composed mostly of rocks and other natural features, with no targets matching the size and shape of August’s Buick LeSabre. The previously identified deep hole, as well as the other targeted river sections, are cleared without finding the vehicle. The team also tests a new custom built RC boat equipped with the same sonar technology as the full sized boats. They used this to clear a small pond that would have been easily accessible in an accident scenario. This new piece of equipment will greatly enhance future searches by making small sections faster to clear. While this search for August Schwabenland did not result in a recovery, the effort helps to eliminate search areas. Adventures With Purpose shares their findings and encourages continued vigilance.
