There are only a few who have survived mass extinction events in the animal kingdom. Tortoises are evolutionarily speaking very old, they have been around for 200 Million years old. They can live to be up to 200 years old. Solitary herbivores who are slow and methodical in their movements, they digest things very slowly. They can go for extended periods of time without food, their slow metabolism allows them to go for weeks without food and it also contributes to their long lifepans. They also through the use of a Jacobson's Organ smell with their mouths.
