Description
Divers on a shallow checkout dive in the Galapagos Islands were surprised to see two large and curious hammerhead sharks show up. As the divers rested on the sand and watched the fish and the sea lions, two agitated sharks came in close and eyeballed the divers.
Normally, hammerheads are not much of a concern for scuba divers. They almost never show aggression to humans unless the humans are acting irresponsibly. These hammerheads had their fins pointed down and they were moving much more quickly than usual. These are signs of agitation or feeding behaviour. Generally, hammerheads hunt at night, not during the day.
The sharks circled around for a few minutes before moving on. The divers were thrilled to see the sharks, even though it was slightly unnerving.
