Description

This is Professor Angus McIntosh, a freshwater ecologist at @universityofcanterbury, painstakingly taking photos of baby freshwater fish. 46 years ago, Bob McDowall and Tony Eldon released a guide called ‘The Ecology of Whitebait Migration’ - the first of its kind and a bit of a classic in the field. Angus and our freshwater team have been working on updating this guide - something our staff and whitebait fishers will be able to use to figure out which species are being caught when and where around the country, kitted up with excellent reference photos shot by Angus himself! We’re highlighting this mahi just ahead of World Fish Migration Day this Saturday, a worldwide celebration of free-flowing rivers and the life they support. What better way to celebrate our fishy friends than with stunning headshots (and research to better understand them, of course)? 😉🐟 The updated guide is a work in progress as Angus and our team search for the rarer galaxiid species to photograph at different life stages. We’ll let you know when it’s ready! Read more about the fishy work here: bit.ly/4v0DiK2 🎥: Suze Harris, DOC
