Description
I’m about to make a big mistake- setting this post directly on concrete.
It would wick up water and rot and there’s nothing to hold it down.
Here’s how to do I the right way.
First, I’m gonna use a bracket that will get bolted to the concrete.
I need to drill a 5/8” hole in the concrete with a hammer drill.
I make sure to drill the hole about a ½” deeper than the bolt is long.
Now I can hear everyone in the comments saying you need to use a washer.
These Simpson Titen bolts have a washer built into the head.
I actually called an inspection on this post and the inspectors on his way; so, I’ve got to hurry if I want to pass.
The bracket holds the post up off the concrete so It’s less likely to rot.
I’m using braces, one in each direction to plumb up the post.
There’s two ways to mount the post to the bracket.
One is with these 16D nails or with these SD connector screws- they’re easy to use but they do stick out a little bit which makes it hard if you’re trying to wrap the post.
Right then the inspector showed up. He was counting every single nail.
Then he got his tiny clip board- this made me nervous.
Thankfully, I passed! @hausplans
