Description
Yesterday I managed to get a first taste of the new 2026 Formula 1 season regulations during the filming day of the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls Formula One Team, or simply (and better) Racing Bulls, and their 2026 car, called VCARB03. After Tuesday's shakedown (limited to just 15km aka 3 laps of Imola), on Wednesday the team opted to start discovering the car using one of the filming days available from each team during the season. Filming days are limited to 200km (40 laps of Imola) and they should be reserved for promotional or marketing purposes but of course teams aim to have the first real checks after all the work done during the winter (or after any important mid-season update). During the day both official drivers, Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad, took turns at the wheel using only a part of the 200 km allowed.
The VCARB03 in the video could still be a sort of test car that will undergo important modifications during and after the official test sessions scheduled over the next few weeks, but this first 'test mule' certainly allows the team to start checking on the mechanical parts, the entire power unit and have first-hand data on the aerodynamics compared to the what they obtained in the simulator and the wind tunnel.
Unlike the last technical cycle, which ended in 2025, 2026 cars will be smaller and lighter, will feature active front aerodynamics and narrower tires. Overall downforce will be reduced by 15-30%, while drag reduced by up to 40%. DRS will be replaced with a "Overtake Mode", requiring drivers to adapt to more power management and different driving styles. F1's new power units will rely more on electrical energy, which will see a 50-50 split between electric power and the internal combustion engine, with nearly a 300 per cent increase in electrical power compared to 2025. The engine itself is still the same 1.6-litre V6 turbo that has been used since 2014 but all the bits around that have changed, including the disappearance of the MGU-H. The engines will be powered by sustainable fuels.
In 2026 Red Bull will produce their own engine for the first time, having formed Red Bull Powertrains in 2021, with the company taking on help from Ford and, as a direct consequence, the Racing Bulls team also adopts this new engine.
