Back When Trade Froze… Literally.

Back in the day, when trade relied heavily on massive cargo and merchant ships, the routes would often freeze over during winter — especially in cold northern regions — leaving those ships stuck and disrupting trade. So smaller vessels, known as icebreakers, were sent out to literally break the ice and clear a path so trade could keep moving. And that’s how “break the ice” became a phrase for starting conversations or easing tension.
