Description
Diljit Dosanjh’s film Punjab 95 has now been released as Satluj, and it is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra.
But who was Jaswant Singh Khalra?
Born on 2 November 1952 in Khalra village, Punjab, Jaswant Singh Khalra first worked as a bank employee in Amritsar. After Operation Blue Star, Indira Gandhi’s assassination, and the anti-Sikh riots, Punjab went through a deeply disturbing phase. During this time, many Sikh families alleged that their loved ones were picked up on suspicion and never returned.
Khalra started investigating these missing persons. While checking Amritsar municipal records, he found that many bodies were allegedly cremated as “unclaimed” or “unidentified” without informing families. Reports say he exposed more than 2,000 such cases in the Amritsar area.
On 6 September 1995, Jaswant Singh Khalra was abducted from outside his home. Later investigations revealed that he was illegally detained, tortured, and killed. His body was never returned to his family.
