This course provides an in-depth exploration of the traditional rhythms and dances of Guinea, West Africa, focusing on their cultural, historical, and technical significance. Students will engage in rigorous training in foundational and advanced movement techniques rooted in Guinean dance forms, including Dundunba, Sorsonet, Mane, Balanta, Kuku, Soli, and more.
Emphasis will be placed on musicality, rhythm identification, and the relationship between drum and dance, with live percussion accompaniment serving as a key component of the learning experience. Through studio practice, students will develop strength, stamina, and precision while embodying the spirit, power, and storytelling aspects embedded in each dance.
