DENR says social media forces large mining firms to be responsible

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Acting Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna said during the Kapihan sa Manila Hotel forum on Wednesday, July 15, that modern tools and widespread social media use now make it nearly impossible for large-scale mining firms to hide violations, pushing them toward responsible operations. Cuna noted most big mining firms are locally owned and publicly listed, so non-compliance carries heavy costs. He added the government’s main concern now is unregulated small-scale mining, and that one-stop shops and support programs are being set up to help them secure permits and operate legally.
