Beneath her matted fur and trembling body was a soul who had suffered in silence for far too long. Her skin was raw, her eyes half-closed in pain, and her fur was absolutely crawling with fleas. This wasn’t just neglect. It was cruelty disguised as care. Someone looked at her every day and still chose to do nothing. Eventually, the owner’s friend returned Zeppole to our rescue. When we saw Zeppole in person for the first time again, we were heartbroken to see her scratching until her skin bled and her fur fell out, desperate for relief from the fleas attacking her. One of her eyes has an ulcer, and the constant irritation has left her in agony. She’s been treated with multiple medications to kill the fleas, soothe her skin, and ease her pain, but recovery will take time. For now, she hides under her bed, too frightened to face the world that failed her. As rescuers and animal lovers, we strive to do everything right—the vet checks, the adoption interviews, the contracts—and still, we find ourselves cleaning up the heartbreak left behind by human apathy. Each neglected animal brings mounting medical bills, more sleepless nights, and more emotional toll on a rescue already stretched to its limit. Zeppole’s care, treatments, and ongoing recovery are costly, but her life is worth every cent. Zeppole didn’t deserve this pain. She deserves warmth and love.
