Rethinking Addiction as Public Health

Addiction is often misunderstood as a lack of willpower or moral weakness, but it’s actually a complex, chronic health condition that affects the brain and behavior. In this video, Michelle Pittman, Nurse Practitioner, speaks about what addiction really is — and what people living with it truly need. Michelle explains how substances like opioids alter brain chemistry, leading to compulsive use and making it difficult for individuals to stop without support. Addiction is not just about personal responsibility — it’s shaped by trauma, pain, disconnection, and lack of care. She also discusses evidence-based treatment options such as opioid agonist therapy (OAT), harm reduction strategies, and the importance of trauma-informed, nonjudgmental care. Peer support, mental health resources, housing, and community-based outreach all play a role in recovery.
