Played in triplets, the pattern stops resolving where you expect. Add displacement — deliberately shifting the starting point of the sticking against the pulse — and the phrasing creates tension and release that’s already baked into the rudiment. Displacement (musical definition): Playing a repeated pattern so it starts on a different part of the bar, changing how it resolves against the underlying pulse without changing the tempo.
