Description
It’s time for another high-stakes, stealth session with OCN’s own ninja rescuer, Antoine! The seals living around the Walvis Bay docks have become incredibly accustomed to fishermen and factory workers, meaning they aren't naturally afraid of humans. However, Antoine still has to tread incredibly carefully. These harbor bulls are massive, pure muscle, and can inflict severe damage if they get spooked or feel cornered.
We strongly believe we are catching the exact same seals over and over again, given the limited population that permanently resides in the harbor. Tragically, this pattern proves that seals are entirely incapable of recognizing an entanglement hazard. They cannot learn that a playful curiosity with a floating plastic loop underwater will inevitably lead to a lifetime of constriction, deep pain, and immobility.
Without the cognitive ability to make that connection, these seals are trapped in an endless loop of re-entanglement, unless we find a definitive way to stop treating our oceans like a dumpster. Until then, the OCN team will be right here on the concrete, breaking the cycle one rescue at a time.
