Description
India’s largest city might not spring to mind when thinking of the country’s wildlife, but a stretch of water there is home to thousands of flamingos which form a sea of pink against the urban landscape.
Singapore’s diplomatic mission in India released this footage from the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary in Mumbai, calling it a “true ecological marvel.”
“Stunning sights at the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, where tens of thousands of greater and lesser flamingos migrate to each year,” the mission wrote on X.
According to the Smithsonian Magazine, the birds only began appearing in significant numbers locally in the 1990s. Untreated sewage flowing into Thane Creek has produced the perfect conditions for the algae the flamingos feed on. The population has as a result soared well over 100,000.
