Description

BYD’s premium brand Denza has launched its first two models, the Denza B5 and Denza B8 4x4 SUVs, and has a long-term plan to overtake BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus to become the market-leading luxury car brand in Australia. Just as BYD has scaled the charts to become a top 10 brand in Australia with its fast-growing mainstream EV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) range, Denza plans to muscle in on long-established prestige marques with an assortment of high-tech and innovative electrified models at competitive price points. “Similarly [to BYD], in the premium to luxury space we intend to be one of the leaders from a volume point of view,” said Denza Australia chief operating officer, Mark Harland, in an interview with RACV. “We’re not getting in this just to sell a couple of hundred here and there – we intend to be leaders with those other premium luxury brands.” How does Denza and its parent BYD plan to achieve that? With which cars? Denza has published two blurred models under ‘coming soon’ on its Australian website – these are the Z9 GT electric sports wagon and the D9 luxury people-mover. The Denza D9 seven-seat luxury people-mover has received homologation approval to be sold in Australia and was spotted testing in Victoria during 2025. Local regulatory documents point to the approval of two EV powertrains, while a plug-in hybrid is also available overseas. The D9 is a rival for the Mercedes-Benz EQV, Zeekr 009, Lexus LM hybrid, LDV Mifa 9 and the new GAC M8 PHEV. Watch out for the GWM Wey G9 in 2026, too. The Denza D9’s Hong Kong spec (right-hand drive) points to advanced infotainment tech for the front and rear seat occupants and premium materials used throughout the cabin.
