(AP) - Texas Gov. Greg Abbott faced no serious competition this time around after easily beating two GOP challengers from the party’s hard right in 2022.
Abbott, who was first elected in 2014, is seeking a record fourth term in November.
He and Rick Perry, his predecessor, are the only Texas governors to be elected to three consecutive four-year terms.
Abbott has won by double-digits every time he’s been on the ballot as governor.
His campaign began the year flush with more than $100 million and Abbott is using that money to help other Republican candidates, including in the Houston area, a purple battleground that the GOP is working hard to turn red.
Abbott has a been a strong supporter of Trump’s hard-line immigration crackdown.
