First opening in 1990 at Universal Studios Florida, the Horror Make-Up Show was designed as both an educational tribute and a tongue-in-cheek parody of Hollywood horror filmmaking. Over the decades, the show has evolved, but its core mission has remained the same: to celebrate Universal Pictures’ role as the birthplace of cinematic horror while entertaining audiences through comedy, audience participation, and behind-the-scenes effects. The performance is mostly scripted, with plenty of room for improvisation between the actors and the audience — often resulting in unique jokes, celebrity references, and crowd-specific humor. The show is hosted by Alex Ross alongside Universal’s eccentric creature creator and visual effects artist Mark James (or Marty James, depending on the cast), beginning with a deliberately shocking and comedic fake “death” that immediately sets the tone. From there, the show walks through Universal’s horror legacy with montage clips showcasing the studio’s pioneering monster films. Live demonstrations reveal how classic effects like fake blood, prop knives, and limb mutilations are safely achieved onstage, before shifting into the real history of makeup artistry. Tributes are paid to Lon Chaney, the “Man of a Thousand Faces,” and legendary Universal makeup artist Jack Pierce, whose work defined icons such as Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and the Bride of Frankenstein. The show then bridges classic and modern filmmaking, highlighting the advancements made by artists like Rick Baker and Ve Neill, and explaining how motion capture and CGI expanded creature performances in modern films such as The Mummy (2017).
