Description
Electric cars are more popular than manual transmissions, as indicated by sales in the United States. How wild! Instead of lots of gears, EVs generally do away with shifting gearboxes. This doesn't mean they don't have gears, it’s just that most EVs have a single drive ratio, meaning there’s no shifting gears. Compared to combustion engines, electric motors can rev way higher, produce lots of torque at low RPM, and remain efficient across a wide RPM range. Adding multiple gears to an electric car means increased complexity, added weight, and efficiency losses. There are examples of geared electric vehicles: Porsche uses a two-speed gearbox in the back of the Taycan. Early Formula-E (electric racing) days, the cars were running as many as five gears!
