Shoes can elevate your style, sharpen your image, and make you look more confident—or they can make you look clueless. Some shoes and footwear mistakes make men look ridiculous, outdated, or completely out of touch with modern style. To be clear, these are my opinions, and not everybody is going to agree. But after years of talking about men's style, I've seen certain shoes consistently drag down a guy's appearance. While some people prioritize comfort or trends, I believe style and fit matter if you want to present your best self. 1. Boat Shoes - In my opinion, boat shoes make most guys look like huge dorks. While some younger guys still love them, I've never been a fan of the look. They feel dated and awkward rather than stylish. 2. Fake Leather Shoes - Cheap faux-leather shoes are a hard pass for me. They crack, wear out quickly, and look inexpensive. I'd rather invest a little more money in genuine leather that lasts longer and looks significantly better. 3. Hey Dude Shoes ("Hey Dork Shoes") - I jokingly call them "Hey Dork Shoes." They're incredibly popular with middle-aged guys because they're comfortable, but I think they're ugly and do nothing to improve your style. 4. Yeezys in 2026 - For me, Yeezys are done. I never thought they looked particularly good, and now they feel completely played out. I compare them to "potato shoes" because of their bulky shape. 5. Dad-Style New Balance Sneakers - Unless you're intentionally dressing in a youthful streetwear style, I think classic dad-style New Balance shoes make grown men look exactly like what they are trying not to look like—a dorky dad. 6. Running Shoes with Non-Athletic Outfits - One of my biggest pet peeves is seeing running shoes paired with jeans, chinos, or casual outfits. Athletic shoes belong with athletic clothing. Otherwise, they age you instantly. 7. Air Force Ones - I know this one is controversial, but I consider Air Force Ones a very youthful shoe. If a middle-schooler can pull them off better than you can, I think it's time to upgrade your footwear game. 8. Cowboy Boots Worn Incorrectly - I don't hate cowboy boots, but I do hate it when guys wear slim pants that get caught on the shaft of the boot, creating a visible outline. If you're wearing larger boots, your pants should drape naturally over them. 9. Pointy-Toed Boots - Outside of traditional cowboy boots, pointy-toed boots often look cheap to me. I prefer more refined shapes and matte finishes over shiny, exaggerated designs. 10. WHITE Driving Moccasins - White driving moccasins are a major no for me. They're one of those shoes that almost never improve an outfit. 11. Driving Moccasins in Business Settings - Driving mocs have their place with shorts or relaxed summer outfits, but wearing them with business casual attire or a suit makes you look clueless in my opinion. 12. Overpriced Designer "Hype" Shoes - Huge, bulky, brightly colored designer sneakers that cost a fortune but go out of style a month later make absolutely no sense to me. Expensive doesn't automatically mean stylish. 13. Platform Sneakers - I'm not a fan. Platform sneakers look unnatural and awkward, and I think they make guys look like they're trying too hard. 14. Hiking Boots with Regular Casual Clothes - Unless you're actually hiking or wearing outdoor gear, hiking boots often look out of place and mismatched with everyday outfits. 15. Ecco Shoes - While comfortable, I think many Ecco shoes have an orthopedic appearance that sacrifices style for comfort. 16. Rockport Shoes - Rockports fall into a similar category for me. They're comfortable, but they often look like shoes designed purely for foot problems rather than style. Several habits that can make any shoe look worse:
