Indra begins as the mighty Vedic protector who brings rain, breaks droughts, and stands beside kings in battle, celebrated as the supreme force of nature and order. Over time, his image cracks after the killing of Vishvarupa, revealing a ruler driven more by fear and insecurity than righteousness. The epics and Upanishads deepen this decline as episodes like Ahalya, the fear of ascetics, and Garuda’s supremacy expose his moral and spiritual fragility. In the Puranas, Indra often appears jealous, impulsive, and easily threatened, humbled by Krishna in the Govardhan episode and repeatedly overshadowed by rising divine figures. As later traditions elevate Vishnu, Shiva and the Goddess, Indra gradually becomes a symbol of ego and instability… a reminder that power without wisdom is destined to fall.
