It is a profound honor and joy for us to welcome your peaceful footsteps here at the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Surabaya.This church is more than just a historic building. Built in 1921, this Cathedral is the "Mother Church" for 47 parishes spread across half of East Java. As a Cathedral, this is the primary place of worship for the Bishop of Surabaya and serves as the spiritual home for all Catholics in this diocese. Life is a Journey Together On behalf of the Catholic community of the Diocese of Surabaya, I extend our warmest welcome to the Bhikkhus who are on this spiritual pilgrimage to Borobudur. Your long journey on foot reminds us of a deep truth: life is a journey. In the Catholic tradition, we hold a principle called Synodality, which means "Walking Together." The mission of the Catholic Church is to walk side-by-side with all people to create a world that is peaceful, prosperous, and filled with compassion. The Meaning of Mandala Your destination is Borobudur. For all of us, that great temple is a Mandala—a spiritual path toward heaven or nirvana. It is interesting to note that our Catholic University, located right behind this church, is named Widya Mandala. Widya means "true knowledge," and Mandala represents the stages of achieving spiritual enlightenment. I believe your journey is not just a physical movement from Bali to Borobudur. It is a journey through a spiritual Mandala, moving from the chaos of the world toward true inner peace. Pilgrims of Hope Your arrival is very timely. We have just completed a sacred year of spiritual pilgrimage called the Jubilee of Hope, initiated by Pope Francis and continued by Pope Leo XIV. Like you, we are called to be "Pilgrims of Hope" in a world that needs healing.To conclude, I wish you a blessed pilgrimage.
