Why French Women Were Shaved By The French Resistance

It was one of the most terrible sights of the Second World War. Following the liberation of French towns and cities, many French women were dragged into public squares and they had their heads shaved. They were accused of sleeping with enemy German soldiers, but why else did this happen and what does it tell us about France's dark days of occupation?
