A Week in the Mountains on a Helicopter Fly-In Newfoundland Moose Hunt
I left for this Newfoundland moose hunt just one week after returning from the Yukon, where I wrapped up back-to-back trips, a multi-day, unsuccessful moose hunt and a solo descent of a wild river. This time I headed east, flying into Deer Lake, Newfoundland before hopping on a helicopter to a remote fly-in camp at Caribou Lake with Sou’wester Outfitters. I was hunting with my friend Jamie, a guide with the outfitter and someone I’ve hunted with in Newfoundland before. Non-residents are required to hunt with a guide here, but once we were dropped off, all hunts were conducted on foot, with no ATVs in the area — either walking directly out from the lodge or taking a small tiller-driven motor boat to access various points on the lake, then hiking from there through rugged terrain. The week involved climbing mountains, glassing from high vantage points, and putting a lot of miles on our boots in big country.
After calling in and taking a mature bull, I spent the rest of the week helping the other guides and hunters in camp by spotting moose from elevated positions and assisting with heavy pack-outs. We saw a lot of moose over the course of the hunt, including another very large bull, along with three bears — one of which we spotted and stalked high on a mountaintop we climbed twice. Ptarmigan were thick on the high ground, blueberries were abundant, and each evening ended with hot meals back at camp. One standout was a stuffed moose heart from my bull, baked by the camp cook and shared around the table along with her recipe. It was a full week of hard hunting, long miles, and big landscapes — a true remote Newfoundland adventure on foot.
