Netflix boss speaks out on Paramount-Warner deal | Exclusive interview

The battle for control of Warner Bros Discovery is over. In one of the biggest entertainment deals in history, the maker of the Harry Potter franchise and every extraordinary HBO drama series from The Sopranos to Succession, was sold at auction on Thursday for $111bn (£82bn). The buyer, Paramount boss David Ellison, got his prize after a months-long takeover battle with Netflix. The streaming pioneer suddenly walked away from perhaps its only chance to own the studio, which vies with Disney for the title of Hollywood’s most celebrated. So it’s over. Or perhaps not quite. The next episode may offer its own drama. Throughout the bidding, the Ellison camp claimed they would more easily win regulatory approval than Netflix. Their vanquished rival remains sceptical.
