Report by Jérôme Galichet, produced by RTS Radio Télévision
The alarming phenomenon of live-streamed child sexual abuse continues to leave countless victims in its wake. RTS follows the trail of a Swiss paedophile sentenced for paying parents to molest their children, and searches for answers.
While RTS are visiting the National Police Headquarters, a woman is suddenly brought in under arrest for selling her baby to an undercover police operation. “I had no money to raise her. I didn’t want to sell my baby.” She’d seen ads on Facebook offering money for babies. Manila is home to many poverty-stricken slums. In Burgos, Manila’s red-light district, prostitution is everywhere. Why is the Philippines a hotspot for these crimes? “A lot of these cases happened during the pandemic, which created a situation where more vulnerable families live in poverty,” explains Francis Bermido, the director at the Preda Foundation, which assists child victims of abuse to learn to live again after the crimes. The Preda Foundation runs emotional therapy sessions that encourage victims to confront their abusers. “I’m nervous and angry,” explains Rita, who suffered at the hands of her own family.
