Wolverine (Gulo gulo) ranging behaviour in a zoo enclosure

Wolverines are long-ranging carnivores that hunt their prey by using a loping run, which is energy efficient and enables them to travel long distances with ease. In captivity this can manifest as a stereotypic route tracing behaviour or it may be an adaptive output (whereby the behaviour is still inherently performed by the individual) and is thus part of the species typical behaviour for that species. Context is important for distinguishing abnormal repetitive behaviour from "natural" behaviour patterns.
